I knew that the WinSXS folder was consuming a lot of space, so I did some digging and found a way to clean up some space. You can remove the backups from installing Windows Service Pack 1 using the DISM command.<\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\">Perform the following steps:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>Ensure Windows Service Pack 1 is installed<\/li>\n<li>Start and elevated command prompt (run &#8216;CMD&#8217; as administrator)<\/li>\n<li>Run the DISM command:<br \/>\n<strong>DISM.exe \/online \/Cleanup-Image \/spsuperseded<\/strong><\/li>\n<li>Grab a cup of coffee while the task completes (it ends with \u201cService Pack Cleanup operation completed. The operation completed successfully\u201d)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"LEFT\">Normally you can reduce the WinSXS folder size bay a Gig or so, just remember, saved space may vary. Note that after using DISM you will no longer be able uninstall Service Pack 1.<\/div>\n<div align=\"LEFT\">The switches we used for DISM.exe are:<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>\/online <\/strong><\/em>&#8211; tells DISM to work on the running OS installation<\/li>\n<li><em><strong>\/spsuperseded<\/strong><\/em><strong> &#8211; <\/strong>removes the backup files created during installation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div align=\"LEFT\">I haven&#8217;t tried it yet, but the <em><strong>\/hidesp<\/strong><\/em><em> <\/em>option should remove SP1 <strong>(KB976932) <\/strong>from the \u201cInstalled Updates\u201d section of Programs and Features.
